Earth and Space Research (ESR) is a non-profit research institute headquartered in the U-District, near the University of Washington campus. Composed of a diverse group of research scientists and professional administrators, ESR encourages excellence in scientific inquiry through a supportive and responsive management team.
ESR’s mission is to increase societal understanding of the Earth system through scientific research and public education.
Our scientists recognize the importance of communicating their knowledge and their passion directly with the public. Outreach and education are therefore integral parts of our efforts. We are open to considering specific requests from the community: please contact our outreach coordinator.
Incorporated in 1995 under the laws of the State of Washington, ESR has been granted tax-exempt status under section 501(c)3 of the United States Internal Revenue Code. Our organization is primarily funded by federal governmental agencies including the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), National Science Foundation (NSF), Office of Naval Research (ONR), and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
Working at ESR
ESR emphasizes the individual while providing a unified management and support structure. We provide competitive employee benefits and a flexible approach to an individual employee’s work needs. Management of contracts and grants, and other administrative services, are provided by the members of our experienced and dedicated administrative team. Our management team and Board of Directors guide organizational development, while scientists remain generally autonomous in managing their own projects.
We are interested in expanding our scientific team by adding additional research scientists whose research interests complement those of the organization and who have existing or potential funding. Scientists are encouraged to discuss their interest in ESR directly with one of our Senior Scientists.
