Research – Earth and Space Research

ESR’s research covers a wide range from small scale process studies in the cryosphere to global mapping of sea surface salinity, surface currents, and eddies . We cover the oceans, the atmosphere, and the ice surfaces of our planet (the cryosphere). We use the myriad of data products from earth observing satellites, state of the art high performance computing facilities to create models of the ocean and its ice cover, go into the field to take measurements, and develop novel instruments for exploring new science topics. Oceans

The oceans cover 71% of the Earth’s surface and are critical to life on our planet. ESR scientists study what makes the ocean move and how changes in heat and salt affect our climate.

Atmosphere

Monitoring and understanding Earth's atmosphere are central to supporting the functioning of healthy ecosystems and economies. ESR engages in a wide array of atmospheric sciences.

Cryosphere

Understanding the cryosphere, areas where water is in frozen, is essential to understanding the Earth's climate. Explore how ESR is studying sea ice, snow, ice sheets and shelves, and the polar oceans and atmosphere.

Satellite Remote Sensing
