Polar meteorology, properties of polar clouds, surface energy and mass budgets, novel instrumentation
Von was born in Boulder, Colorado, but grew up in rural Montana, where he attended a 3-room schoolhouse through 8th grade. He received a B.S. in physics from Utah State University, where he participated in the Getaway Special program that launched student experiments into space aboard the Space Shuttle. He then worked in industry as an electro-optical engineer, designing and testing attitude-control systems for satellites. He used this experience to return to graduate school at the University of Washington where he attained M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Geophysics. His Ph.D. advisor at UW was Steve Warren, who introduced Von to research in the polar regions (https://doi.org/10.1029/97JD02433). Von continued to collaborate with Steve on projects in Antarctica for many years, during which they co-advised several graduate students. During this time, Von became a faculty member at the University of Idaho. In the mid-2000s, Von started performing research in the Arctic, first at Eureka, Canada, then at Summit Station, Greenland. In 2009, Von help start a long-term measurement program at Summit Station, Greenland called the Integrated Characterization of Energy, Clouds, Atmospheric state, and Precipitation at Summit (ICECAPS). In summer 2024, the ICECAPS team deployed a novel instrumentation platform at Dye-2 in Greenland (using renewable energy) to measure atmospheric and near-surface snow properties in the percolation zone of the Greenland Ice Sheet. In 2013, Von took a faculty position at the Laboratory for Atmospheric Research at Washington State University and became an ESR Affiliate in 2024.
