Earth and Space Research (ESR) offers dynamic educational programs for college and high school students, designed to inspire and equip the next generation of scientists and engineers. Through hands-on learning experiences, students engage with cutting-edge research in oceanography, climate science, and space exploration. These programs provide opportunities for students to work alongside leading researchers, participate in fieldwork, and develop essential skills in scientific inquiry and data analysis. By fostering a passion for earth and space sciences, ESR prepares students for future academic and professional success.
In 2024, Earth and Space Research (ESR) expanded its educational programs by hosting a small team of data scientist and data engineer masters students from Northeastern University (NU) Seattle as part of an intensive 8-week internship experience called the NU Seattle’s Experience Expo.
As part of our mission, ESR is committed to education and outreach in our community. In 2024, Earth and Space Research (ESR) expanded its educational programs by hosting a small team of data scientist and data engineer masters students from Northeastern University (NU) Seattle as part of an intensive 8-week internship experience called the NU Seattle’s Experience Expo. The NU masters students were tasked with developing a ML model aimed at improving predictions of sea ice extent by including Arctic sea surface salinity from a data product curated in-house at ESR.
The NU students did an amazing job at their task. They quickly came up to speed on the geophysics necessary to complete the job, they worked well together, and communicated very well with us – the industry mentors. We can’t say enough good about the group or the project outcome. But we don’t have to because the judges at the NU Expo 2024 celebration awarded these students (David Treadwell IV, Deepthi Sreepada, Ee Qi Lim, Sicheng Zhou, and Wayne Zhou) Best in Show!
ESR is looking forward to continuing this collaboration with NU students through internships this fall (2024) and expanding our involvement next summer through new mentored projects.
As we continue to expand our educational programs, we are always looking at ways we can interact with the community and increase our interactions through internships and mentoring. Please reach out to our educational programs lead, Michael Town, to explore educational collaborations.
