Salinity: definition.
The ocean consists almost entirely of water (H2O) and dissolved salt. We define
the salinity of seawater as the number of grams of salt dissolved in 1 kilogram
of seawater. A typical value of salinity is 35, which means that about 3.5% of
the weight of seawater is due to salt.
