Density: definition.

The density of a fluid is its mass per unit volume. For the ocean, the density is a bit more than 1000 kilograms per cubic meter. Ocean density increases as the ocean gets cooler or as it gets saltier. The changes in density can be very small, but are still important to setting ocean circulation. (see "Thermohaline").
