Jonathan M. Lilly received the B.S. degree in atmospheric science and oceanography from Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut, in 1994, and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in physical oceanography from the University of Washington, Seattle, Washington, in 1997 and 2002, respectively.

He was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Washington, Seattle, Applied Physics Laboratory and School of Oceanography from 2002 to 2003, and at the Laboratoire d'Oceáanographie Dynamique et de Climatologie of the Universitá Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris, from 2003 to 2005. Since 2005 he has been a research associate at Earth and Space Research, a non-profit, tax exempt scientific institute in Seattle. His research interests are oceanic vortex structures, satellite oceanography, time / frequency analysis methods, and wave-wave interactions.
