Upper-Ocean Velocity Data from Vessel-Mounted ADCP
and ADCP Single Ping Data Archive

The U.S. S.O. GLOBEC ADCP datasets from 2001, 2002, and 2003 Southern Ocean GLOBEC cruises are available for download

Data Acknowledgement Policy

The ADCP data provided here were collected as part of the NSF-funded Southern Ocean GLOBEC program, and therefore their accessibility, use and acknowledgement are governed by the Data Policy for S. O. GLOBEC. The data are intended for scholarly use by the academic and scientific community, with the express understanding that any such use will properly acknowledge the originating investigator. Use or reproduction of any material herein for any commercial purpose is prohibited without prior written permission from the U.S. GLOBEC Data Management Office. Please read the complete data acknowledgement policy.

Overview

Both processed ensemble ADCP data and raw single ping ADCP data are available for each cruise.

Quality

Processed Ensemble ADCP Data

The following datasets have been processed and represent final results. Year 2001 and year 2002 data have been submitted to the NODC database (year 2003 will be submitted soon).

Although we don't anticipate any changes at this time, it is possible that these files may change in the future. If you would like to be notified when updated versions are available, email Susan Howard and you will be put on a list. Otherwise, please check back for updates.

Notes on the quality of each data set are included in the downloads.

Single Ping ADCP Data

RAW single ping datasets for each S.O. GLOBEC cruise are available for download. In 2001, the RVIB NB Palmer and RVIB LM Gould were upgraded to collect a full suite of data needed for full single-ping editing (i.e. processing single pings to ocean velocities).

LMG0103, LMG0104, and LMG0106 were collected before the new system was implemented. The single ping data from these cruises can only be used as an aid for looking at amplitude (backscatter).

NBP0103, NBP0104, NBP0202, NBP0204, LMG0201A, LMG0203, LMG0205, and LMG0302 datasets contain the complete set of data needed for processing the single ping data.

Format

Processed Ensemble ADCP Data

These datasets have been created using MATLAB. The files available for download are zipped. Each *.zip file contains a *.mat file and a readme.txt file. The *.mat files contains the following variables:
  • u - east-west velocity
  • v - north-south velocity
  • bin_depth - depth of each u and v data point
  • dec_day - time in decimal days ( Noon on Jan 1, 2001 is 0.5 )
  • year_base - year of cruise
  • start_day - date and time of first data point
  • end_day - date and time of last data point
  • lat - latitude
  • lon - longitude

This data is also available through the JGOFS server.

Single Ping Data

The full suite of single ping data for NBP0103, NBP0104, NBP0202, NBP0204, LMG0201A, LMG0203, LMG0205, and LMG0302 includes 5 subdirectories with the following files:

ashtech/ *.adu
gyro/ *.hdg
gpsnav/ *.gps
nb150/ *.raw *.raw.log *.raw.err
sndspd/ *.spd

The files are available for download below through FTP. Each subdirectory is tar'ed (e.g. the files from the ashtech directory are available as an ashtech.tar file) and all files within tar file are gzipped. WARNING: these file are quite large (~10 MB to >1 GB) and in RAW format.

The format and directory structure of the files is consistent with the CODAS processing software. Information about this software and instructions on processing single ping data can be obtained from the University of Hawaii CODAS3 website:

CODAS3 shipboard ADCP data processing software

Single ping datasets for LMG0103, LMG0104, and LMG0106 are available as well. These datasets contain 1 directory:

adcp_pings/ which contains either *.aux, *.amp, *.raw or just *.raw

The files are available for download below through FTP. The adcp_ping subdirectory is tar'ed and all files within tar file are gzipped.

The single ping data archive will soon be available through the JGOFS server as well.

We will also provide DVD's of the single ping data upon request. Please contact Susan Howard at howard@esr.org for more information.

We emphasize that the single-ping data are for experienced ADCP users only.

ANT-XVIII/5b
The ADCP data from the ANT-XVIII/5b cruise are not covered by the U.S. GLOBEC Data Acknowledgement Policy, and are not available from this site. Interested users are encouraged to contact Volker Strass (vhstrass@AWI-Bremerhaven.DE ) at the Alfred Wegener Institute (Bremerhaven, Germany) for more information on the data set, and to discuss potential collaborations with AWI scientists.
