SATELLITES



Data collected by satellites play an important role in regular monitoring of the polar climate, including ice cover and ice motion. Satellites can monitor biological productivity in the ice-free ocean areas, by observing ocean color at several wavelengths. Satellites can also be used to relay data from instruments deployed in polar regions, back to the research institution. Several researchers at ESR use satellite data from polar regions and elsewhere to study the ocean and atmosphere, and the interaction between them.
